Error MigrationPermanentException directory property homeMDB is not writeable on recipient

Share this:

In this Tutorial we are going over a common error when migrating mailboxes where the following message is displayed:

Error: MigrationPermanentException: Active Directory property ‘homeMDB’ is not writeable on recipient ‘<location>’. –> Active Directory property ‘homeMDB’ is not writeable on recipient information ‘<location>’

The error described in the beginning of this Tutorial is also shown in the image below however some of the content was localized to Portuguese.

The solution is to go to the mailbox with the issue using Active Directory Users and Computers, make sure that the option Advanced Features under View is checked and then get the properties of the affected user. Click on Security tab, and then Advanced button.

Probably, the button Enable inheritance will be shown which means that the inheritance is not being propagated on this object.

The solution or at least the first step towards the solution is to click on the button Enable inheritance and confirm all dialog boxes that may show up, and the result will be similar to the figure below.

After that you can try to move the mailbox again and at this time the results will be positive, or at least the error that started this Tutorial will not be an issue anymore.

In this Tutorial we went over the error related to inheritance on objects in Active Directory when moving mailboxes.
