How to deploy WSUS to support VMM Update Server

How to implement the WSUS role on Windows Server 2012 R2, using this feature the administrator can add the server as Update Servers in VMM 2012 R2.

The WSUS role is key for the VMM strategy where all the servers from the Infrastructure fabric will be consistent from the patch perspective and the administrator will be able to control all updates from a single location, and also apply updates relying  on the high availability and resilience of the virtualization proved by System Center Virtual Machine Manager.

WSUS role can be high available and the administrator has several topologies that can be implemented based on your scenario. However, for this Tutorial we are going to deploy WSUS on the VMM server and this implementation can be used in smaller environments. The same steps provided here could be used in a separate server and the results would be the same from the VMM and WSUS perspective.

Step 01 – Adding WSUS Server role…

The first step is logged on the VMM Server, open Server Manager, on the Dashboard page, click on Add Roles and Features.., in the welcome page of the wizard, just hit Next

In the Installation Type page. Select Role-based or feature-based installation, and click Next

In the Server Selection page. Make sure that the local server is the one selected and click Next.

In the Server Roles page. Select Widnows Server Update Services and on the new window that will pop up, click on Add Features, back to the window below, hit Next.

In the Features page. Just click on Next.

In the WSUS page. A welcome page with some information about the WSUS , just click Next.

In the Role Services page. We can opt by the database type, in our Tutorial we are going to select WID Database and WSUS Service options, and then click Next.

In the Content location selection page. Define a local path to store the udpates, for this scenario the C:\WSUS will be used, however, in production environments make sure to spare a separate hard drive for that data, since WSUS and VMM will be sharing the same server, a nice option is to use that separate drive to host the VMM Library to avoid filing up the C: drive of the server.

In the Confirm installation selections page. Click on Install.

Wait for the process to complete, and just to be safe restart the server although it is not required.

Finishing up WSUS configuration…

After installing the WSUS role, the administrator can finish up the configuration by clicking on Launch Post-Installation tasks warning info located in the Server Manager.

In order to complete the WSUS installation, we must confirm the location for the windows updates and then click on Run, that will start the final post-installation tasks and after that the server will be ready . This process may take a while to complete.

When the process is complete, the administrator has to click on Close to continue.

Finally, we will have the main page of the WSUS role and since this role was configured for the VMM, then we need to stop here because all additional configuration will be performed from Virtual Machine Manager console in our next Tutorial.

In this Tutorial we went over the process to configure WSUS role on a Windows Server 2012 and this server also has VMM (Virtual Machine Manager) installed, in the next Tutorial we are going to add a new Update Server to protect the infrastructure of our Fabric in Virtual Machine Manager.
